How does Resolution Therapeutics’ experimental Regenerative Macrophage Therapy RTX001 differ from existing treatments for advanced liver disease?
Sharing his perspective, Dr Ewan Forrest, Principal Investigator on the EMERALD clinical trial of RTX001 at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, says the clue is in the name.

 

While under normal circumstances the liver has an amazing capacity to repair itself – and so continue to operate as it should – when the organ becomes extensively damaged by scarring and inflammation, it loses this ability.

 

There are currently no approved disease-modifying medical treatments for advanced liver disease; all clinicians can do is treat the symptoms. Resolution Therapeutics is looking to change that with RTX001.

 

Comprising the patient’s own macrophage cells, which have been engineered in the laboratory to make them more potent and longer-lasting, RTX001 has been designed to restore the liver’s ability to regenerate – and thus restore the organ’s normal essential functions.

 

RTX001 is currently being teste at multiple sites in the EMERALD Phase 1/2 clinical trial.
